Nowadays, it is common for doctors to give out diabetes advice and advise their patients who are suffering from diabetes to monitor their own blood glucose level through the use of portable blood glucose monitors. Unfortunately, not all of these people really know how to properly use these blood glucose monitors. We cannot really blame these people because many of these blood glucose monitors have complicated features that can be quite confusing at times. To help people who are suffering from diabetes use a blood glucose monitor, here are some easy steps and tips.
Getting Blood Samples
The first thing that you need to do get blood samples is to prepare the landing device. Make sure that you use a sterile lancing device to prevent infection. When preparing your lancing device, adjust the puncture depth setting to get the sample size required for testing. Note that different models of blood glucose monitors require different volume of blood samples so before you start puncturing your skin and draw some blood, check the requirements of monitor. Always remember that you will not get good results if use less than the required volume of blood and you may have to do the test all over again until you get things right. If you don't want to end up with more skin punctures than necessary, you better make sure that you draw the right amount of blood samples the first time. If you are one of those people who are not really comfortable pricking their skin with needles and drawing blood, you should blood a good lancing device that allows you to draw blood samples without much fuss. You may also ask someone to prick your skin for you.
Before pricking your finger with the lancing device, make sure that your blood glucose monitor is ready. Check the test strip. If you are using plastic test strips, make sure that you put on a new one into the monitor. On the other hand, if you are using a disc to read your results, make sure that your disc is still functional. After making sure that everything is in order, turn on the monitor and get ready to get your blood sample. Wipe your finger tip with sterile cotton or gauze, press the lancing device into your skin firmly then press the eject button to release the lance.
After pricking your fingertip, gently squeeze the sides of your finger to bring out a round drop of blood into the surface of your skin. Gently touch the drop of blood on your fingertip onto the surface of the blood glucose monitor's test strip. Be careful not to spill your blood sample. Hold your finger firmly into the test strips of your monitor for a few seconds while the blood glucose monitor starts reading your blood glucose level. Most types of blood glucose monitor give your results within 60 seconds. Once you get your results, record you test results for future reference. If your blood glucose monitor has a memory storage feature, use the monitor's memory bank to store the information.
