Blood Glucose: Dealing With Hypoglycemia

Recent studies show that diabetes is fast becoming a pandemic not only in the United States but in other parts of the world. Experts believe that poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle are two of the main causes of the rise in the cases of diabetes in the country and around the world. If you are one of those people who are suffering from this disease and often experience symptoms of hypoglycemia, you should test your blood glucose level frequently. Note that hypoglycemia, when not treated properly, can kill you almost instantly so you have to be extra careful and monitor your blood glucose level constantly.

For many people, hypoglycemia is not exactly easy to control or avoid. Although our brains usually send out warning signals when our blood glucose meter level drops, most of us do not really recognize these signals immediately. Unfortunately, our failure to interpret our bodily signals correctly can lead to some serious problems. If you are one of those people who are a suffering from diabetes, you should always be in the look out for symptoms of hypoglycemia such as nervousness, intense hunger, sweating, weakness, trembling, trouble speaking and palpitations. If you feel any of these symptoms, do not just ignore it. Test your blood glucose level immediately to make sure that you are not suffering from hypoglycemia.

Preventing Hypoglycemia

One of the best ways to prevent hypoglycemia is to eat properly. Never skip a meal if you have hypoglycemia. Skipping meals can affect your blood glucose level. Make sure that you eat your breakfast before you leave for work in the morning. Note that your body needs nourishment after sleeping for hours so you cannot skip breakfast even if you are in a hurry to get to work. Forget about grabbing a doughnut and some coffee on your way to the workplace. Eating doughnut will not help you. Note that doughnuts are filled with sugar and carbohydrates so stay away from them. Instead of eating doughnuts, eat something healthy like eggs and oatmeal. You should also add some fruits into your diet especially in the morning. Fruits have plenty of fibers in them.

To keep your blood glucose level stable, you should eat around four to six small meals a day. Small meals are easier to digest compared to big meals. You should also make sure that you eat a balanced diet and avoid fatty foods. Limit your intake of fats to about 30% of your total daily food intake. Not only will you prevent hypoglycemia when you eat less fats, you will also protect yourself from other types of diseases such as hypertension and some forms of cancers.

Aside from eating a healthy diet, you need to do some exercise to keep yourself healthy and fit. Studies show that people who are living sedentary lives are more prone to diabetes and hypoglycemia compared to those people who are more physically active. If your job requires you to sit inside a cubicle all day, make it a point to do some exercise as soon as you get off from work. Simple exercises such as climbing stairs and walking can do wonders to your health.
